7-11 Science & Citizenship

Taking care of our feathered friends

Science lesson image

This science and citizenship lesson focuses on hen welfare and responsible choices. Pupils consider what animals need to stay alive and learn that, to live well, hens need food, water, space, shelter and care. They discover that approved farming systems meet these needs in different ways, and that a good hen home provides nest boxes, perches, clean litter for scratching and dust bathing, and access to fresh food and water. Children design their own hen home, then reflect on why hen welfare matters, how the British Lion mark shows hens are treated well, and the responsible choices they can make when buying eggs.
