7-11 Geography & Citizenship

The great global eggspedition

KS2 lesson plan image

A geography and citizenship lesson in which pupils investigate where eggs come from and how far they travel. Children learn to read the code stamped on an egg: the first digit reveals the farming method (0 organic, 1 free range, 2 barn, 3 cage), the two letters give the country of origin, and the remaining numbers trace the egg back to a specific farm. Using egg codes and a map of Europe, pupils work out the origin and farming method of different eggs, then consider responsible buying choices, weighing cheaper imports against British Lion eggs and the welfare, hygiene and food-safety standards they guarantee.
