KS2 Science – Which animals lay eggs

KS2 lesson plan image

This KS2 science lesson asks pupils to become egg detectives and classify animals by how they reproduce. Children learn the difference between oviparous animals (which lay eggs, such as birds, most fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects) and viviparous animals (which give birth to live young, mostly mammals). They compare how eggs differ between animal groups, from hard-shelled birds' eggs to jelly-like amphibian eggs laid in water, create a fact file about an egg-laying animal, and test their knowledge with a quiz covering surprising cases such as egg-laying platypuses and sharks.
