7-11 Maths
The supermarket supply chain
A maths lesson that uses the journey of an egg from farm to supermarket to solve real-life problems. Pupils learn supply-chain vocabulary (producer, consumer, transport, quantity) and follow each stage: hens laying eggs on the farm, eggs being checked and packed into boxes of 6 and 12, transport by lorry, and sale in the supermarket. Along the way they apply multiplication and division to calculate totals, work out how many boxes a quantity of eggs makes, and plan deliveries, practising careful reading, showing their working and checking their answers.
