British Lion eggs and Chefs in Schools launch campaign to help schools crack nutritious meal solutions

British Lion eggs have launched a new campaign to spotlight the valuable role eggs can play in supporting nutritious, affordable school meals and food education, helping schools make the most of a versatile, nutrient-rich ingredient.

Developed in collaboration with Chefs in Schools, the UK charity dedicated to improving school food through chef training, menu development and practical support, the initiative will raise awareness of egg-based meal solutions through trusted school food channels while providing practical guidance for caterers and curriculum-linked resources for teachers.

The campaign comes as schools across England prepare for the rollout of universal free breakfast clubs in primary schools, with many caterers and kitchen teams seeking practical, affordable ways to deliver nutritious morning provision at scale. Nicole Pisani, Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Chefs in Schools, said:

"Children learn best when they are well fed, particularly at the start of the school day. However, many schools running breakfast clubs face challenges including tight budgets, limited staff time and rising food costs, making it harder to provide nutritious food consistently.

"Eggs offer a simple solution. They're nutrient-dense, high in protein, affordable and quick to prepare, while also being familiar to children. We believe they can play an important role in helping schools serve breakfasts that are both nutritious and practical."

The campaign will raise awareness of the potential for greater use of eggs in schools, highlighting egg-based breakfast and lunch solutions that support children's nutrition, brain development and cognitive function. It will also showcase eggs as an affordable and versatile ingredient that can complement efforts to reduce ultra-processed foods and red meat on menus. Alongside the catering support, British Lion eggs have launched a new curriculum-focused education hub on egginfo.co.uk, featuring a comprehensive collection of key stage 1 and 2 free lesson packs designed to support teaching across the National Curriculum.

The resources use eggs as a real-world context to explore a wide range of subjects, including science, geography, citizenship, health education, maths and English. Designed to support both primary and secondary education, the materials help pupils learn about food, nutrition, sustainability and everyday STEM concepts through engaging classroom activities.

Each pack includes lesson plans, presentations and supporting activities, with versions tailored for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

As part of the partnership, British Lion eggs and Chefs in Schools have also developed practical resources and guidance to help school chefs use eggs safely, nutritiously and cost-effectively in school kitchens. The materials showcase a range of menu ideas and meal solutions, helping caterers maximise the versatility of eggs across breakfast and lunch occasions.

Nick Allen, Chief Executive of the British Egg Industry Council, said:

"We're delighted to be partnering with Chefs in Schools to support schools both in the kitchen and in the classroom.

"Affordable, versatile and quick to prepare, eggs can help chefs create nutritious meals that children enjoy while making budgets go further. Whether served at breakfast or lunch, they offer a simple way to provide high-quality protein and key nutrients throughout the school day.

"By sharing practical menu inspiration, guidance and resources, we hope to give school chefs the confidence to make greater use of eggs in their kitchens and support schools in delivering healthy, appealing meals for pupils."
