New research has revealed that half of shoppers are more concerned about the ingredients used in food products than they were twelve months ago and are seeking greater transparency on food packaging.
84% of British shoppers think manufactured food products that contain eggs, such as quiche, egg sandwiches and Scotch eggs, should always use British eggs. There is also a demand for increased transparency on food packaging with more than 90% of shoppers stating that the origin of eggs should be clearly shown on packs. Nine out of ten consumers would be reassured to see the Lion logo on the packaging of these prepared food products.
The independent research , commissioned by British Lion Egg Processors, showed that consumers’ are unaware of the extent to which foreign eggs are used in foods found on the shelves of British supermarkets, with more than three quarters thinking eggs used in prepared foods are British, and 60% concerned to learn that prepared foods often contain eggs from abroad.
Ian Jones, Chairman of British Lion Egg Processors, said: “Consumers want and deserve a guarantee that retailers and food manufacturers are using good quality British ingredients that are produced to high standards of food safety.
“With shoppers growing increasingly concerned about the ingredients used in manufactured food in the last twelve months, the egg industry believes that this is an issue of growing concern to consumers.
“When it comes to egg products, manufacturers can give consumers the reassurance they are looking for by using British Lion eggs and using the Made with British Lion eggs logo on packaging.”
