Expert claims eggs could help crack the post fat jab challenge
A leading obesity expert has suggested a surprisingly simple solution – the humble egg – to help address a ‘coming storm’ of health issues facing people coming off GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro.
Dr Adam Collins, Professor of Nutrition at Surrey University, writing in The Conversation, says weight regain, muscle loss and vitamin deficiencies are common after stopping weight-loss injections - but eggs have multiple benefits that can help with all these issues.
‘The protein in eggs prompts the release of GLP-1 naturally and suppresses the ‘hunger hormone’ ghrelin, to keep you feeling fuller for longer,’ explains Dr Collins. ‘Protein also helps maintain muscle mass and eggs contain a wide range of essential vitamins and minerals to combat nutrition shortfalls.’
Growing numbers of people are looking for ways to ease off weight-loss jabs due to cost, side-effects, or because they have reached a weight they are happy with.
Eggs can help prevent weight regain
Dr Collins warns that weight regain may be heightened after stopping this weight-loss medication, due to metabolic changes from long-term exposure to high doses of GLP-1.
To help combat this he advises that: ‘As eggs are a natural GLP-1 stimulant, particularly when combined with fibre-rich foods, they are ideal for those looking to taper their medication as they approach their target weight, or indeed those going full-on cold turkey.’
Eggs = protein for muscle maintenance, plus vitamins & minerals
Another challenge is that while on weight-loss drugs, people are often unable to eat enough protein to maintain muscle mass, or to obtain sufficient vitamins and minerals from their diet.
‘Achieving adequate protein intake during weight loss is important, particularly for the preservation of muscle, because you don’t just lose fat when losing weight, especially during rapid weight loss,’ says Dr Collins. ‘This can be particularly difficult when you are on weight loss jabs, because you don’t have much appetite, so eggs can provide a user-friendly portioned source of protein, containing all essential amino acids, as well as a range of key vitamins and minerals to help address nutrition shortfalls,’ says Dr Collins.
‘Eggs can therefore benefit both people before and during GLP-1 drug use, as well as the coming storm of those coming off the jabs.’
